Hands-on with the Nyx Mobile Lyuba Max and Fun mockups

Hands-on with the Nyx Mobile Lyuba Max and Fun mockups

When PR reps have something they think is truly special, things can get a little cloak and dagger. While we were hanging around the Nyx Mobile booth, a rep quietly sneaked up on us, to offer a glimpse of two new handset his company is working on. When we enthusiastically agreed (after our heart rate dropped), he led aside — away from prying eyes — and produced a pair devices, delicately wrapped in a silk handkerchief, from his suit’s inside pocket. We won’t lie, things got a tad disappointing when we realized they were non-functioning mockups, but if the company can pull of these frame-less designs we’ll be quite impressed. Due to begin manufacturing within the next two or three months, the Lyuba Max and Lyuba Fun aim to make bezels a thing of the past. The lack of a frame on the five-inch, 63mm wide Max makes it even trimmer than the significantly smaller-screened Galaxy Nexus, which checks in at about 68mm wide. While we won’t make too many judgments on the feel and design based on a non-functioning prototype we actually found the Max easier to hold and reach all corners of the screen with a single hand than the Nexus or the Note. The four-inch Fun, felt a good half-inch smaller than its specs — more akin to an iPhone in size.

Both devices will come rocking Ice Cream Sandwich, but it’ll be powered by some rather mid-range hardware. Both will pack a 1.2GHz processor, likely of the single-core variety, and neither is boasting impressive screen resolutions. The Max is checking in with a decidedly dated 800 x 480 LCD, while the Fun drops to a lowly HVGA panel. Check out the gallery below for some images of the mockups.

One in Six Cancers Are Caused By Treatable Infections [Medicine]

Cancer is a scourge on our society and, while scientists continue to work on treatments, many people view it as an inevitable truth. New research, however, suggests that as many as one in six cases of cancer are a result of infections—which are either preventable or treatable. More »

Virgin Mobile USA and Boost take WiMAX live, ship HTC EVO V 4G and EVO Design 4G on May 31

Evo V 4G

In sync with Sprint’s plans to get its sub-brands on 4G using its legacy WiMAX network, both Boost Mobile and Virgin Mobile have trotted out their initial 4G lineups. The early Virgin mix includes retreads of two Sprint data-only devices — a Broadband2Go-badged version of the Sierra Wireless Overdrive Pro 3G/4G hotspot and a matching version of the Franklin U600 previously seen at Clear. Virgin’s real star, however, is the HTC EVO V 4G: though it’s ultimately the EVO 3D with a slightly more 2D name, it’s shipping with Android 4.0 from the start and has HTC’s Frankenstein-like Sense 3.6 rather than the 4.0 of the One series. The network upgrade and all three new devices swing into action on May 31, and while your $35 minimum monthly plan will stay in effect even with unlimited on-device 4G, you’ll need to spend $300 (contract-free) to take home an EVO V 4G, $150 on the Overdrive Pro or $100 on the U600 stick.

Boost Mobile is also going the Sprint rebadge route through the HTC EVO Design 4G. As with its bigger brother over at Virgin, the single-core EVO Design 4G is identical in hardware to its Sprint equivalent but slaps Android 4.0 and Sense 3.6 on top to keep the software fresh. The update does mark the first time a Boost phone gets Visual Voicemail, so you can feel slightly less guilty when you miss a call. HTC’s phone will oddly cost the same $300 off-contract as the more advanced EVO V 4G, although Boost is likely counting on customers sticking around long enough for an all-inclusive unlimited plan to drop to $40 per month and make it worthwhile.

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive hands on: surprisingly cool, but still US-only

Amazon Appstore for Android Test Drive

When Amazon Appstore for Android launched last week, one of its primary features — Test Drive — was disabled just a few minutes after it opened. With no try-before-you-buy, no refund process, and 1-Click purchasing ready to strike at any moment, this caused some problems. Anyway, don’t despair: Test Drive is now enabled.

Before you get your hopes up, Test Drive doesn’t work with every app. The IMDb app works fine — you can even watch movie trailers on it! — but the Angry Birds games are sadly not enabled. Some games work surprisingly well, though, like Bubble Buster. There’s very little latency, and the framerate is really rather good. The Test Drive experience is so true to life that you even get ads; how cool is that?

Sharp Cocorobo vacuum avoids obstacles, embraces small talk

Image

With iRobot cleaning up in the robotic vacuum game, it’s only logical that some major manufacturers like LG and Samsung want a piece of the dirt sucking action. Sharp has gotten into the game as well — though the company’s ‘bot goes the extra mile for cleanliness. Cocorobo TX-V100 has voice recognition functionality and will happily talk back, courtesy of its “voice communication,” which includes phrases like the ominous “I understand.” The little floor cleaning disk also has infrared sensors for avoiding obstacles and a built-in camera, so you can observe your sparking abode from a carpet view while you’re out. Cocorobo will be invading Japanese households this June. Check out a video of the ‘bot in action after the break.

Sony unveils Crystal White PlayStation Vita, limited digital diva edition

Image

Remember that line-up of colorful consoles we eyed back at TGS? One of eight of those mock-ups is about to become a reality, at least in Japan. On June 28th, color conscious gamers will be able to pick up a WiFi or 3G Crystal White PlayStation Vita for ¥24,980 and ¥29,980, respectively (that’s about $312 and $375 if you’re counting in greenbacks). If the absence of color is a bit too bland for you, a limited edition Hatsune Miku handheld will hit shelves two months later, commanding a ¥10,000 ($125) premium for the privilege of plastering Sega’s digital diva on your Vita’s rear touch panel. On the plus side, Vocoloid’s poster girl packs a 4GB memory card and a copy of Next Hatsune Miku: Project Diva to offset the limited edition’s larger sticker price. No word yet when or if these Vita variants will hit the western world, but we’ll let you now if we hear anything. Until then? Try to satiate yourself with the video after the break.

Vidpresso Wants To Help TV Stations Put Your Tweets And Facebook Comments On Air

vidpresso_logoIt’s hard to find a live morning show or sports event coverage on TV these days that doesn’t feature tweets or Facebook comments from viewers. For most programs, though, getting those messages on air is actually more difficult than it seems and often involves custom software and expensive hardware. Vidpresso, which officially launches today, offers TV stations a far easier solution. All they need to display social media posts on the air is a Mac mini or Apple laptop that is connected to their existing production equipment and, of course, a subscription to Vidpresso’s web service.

Ask DLS: What’s your primary Web browser?

Competition is a good thing, and the browser arena has been a fierce arena for years now. There are at least four “major” browsers each vying for your attention, along with lots of smaller spin-offs (SRWare Iron or Flock, anyone?).

While the browser usage charts we share from time to time show overall browser usage amongst the Web at large, Download Squad readers are not exactly the average bunch in terms of browser use. So today we have one simple question for you:

What’s your primary Web browser?

Dodge is a space-shooter in which you have no weapons

dodge

Space-shooters are usually a fairly fiery affair, with many types of guns, weapon upgrades, power-ups and more. Dodge does away with all of that, while keeping the very essence of a space shooter: Dark background, fast action, and stuff blowing up all over the place.

Your vector-looking spacecraft is the fastest thing on the screen, most of the time. And as the header implies, you have absolutely no weapons; you can’t get any, either. All you have is agility and maneuverability.

Your opponents shoot heat-seeking missiles at you; the missiles lock on and start tracking you. The trick is to dodge the missiles while putting them in the path of one of your enemies, thus letting them have a taste of their own medicine.

There are three types of enemies, at least in the first few levels: “simple” spaceships which fire slow projectiles, “tanks” which seem to be more serious and take more hits to destroy, and “circles.” The circles simply explode, spewing twenty or thirty very fast projectiles. This sounds dangerous, but is actually great once you learn to use them; they are very destructive for tanks, and can even blow up other circles.

The soundtrack is very techno, but it meshes very well with this type of game. Intense fun!

Windows 8 now available to OEMs via Microsoft Connect

windows 8Select Microsoft Connect partners — major players like HP — have been given their first taste of Windows 8. According to various sources, the build string currently sits at 7971.0.110324-1900, which is the third milestone build of the successor to Windows 7.

So far, there haven’t been many details revealed about Windows 8. An actual System Restore — which is being referred to as History Vault — has been reported, and the feature will allow users and administrators to completely roll back a system to a previous state. A factory reset option is also said to be included.

We’ve also seen Windows Live integration taking shape on the desktop. It’s believed that you’ll be able to log in to Windows 8 using your Windows Live credentials, not just a traditional offline Windows username and password.

All that’s left now is for a leaked Windows 8 build to show up on a torrent site. Feel free to tip us if you see that happen.

Origin PC upgrading pre-Ivy Bridge orders with new silicon, asking nothing in return

Sure, you may need to shop around to find a replacement for that 11-inch number Dell pulled off the shelves, but that doesn’t mean you need to miss out on a free Ivy Bridge upgrade. Origin PC tells us that it’s offering the very same silicon swap as Dell to folks who pulled the trigger on any of its laptop and desktop PCs before Intel’s big launch. If your order hasn’t shipped yet, you’re looking at an upgrade. Now if only we could find a manufacturer willing to hand out free GPU upgrades.

Skype 5.3 for Windows released, improves mobile video call quality

Version 5.3 of Skype for Windows has just been released, with the main emphasis of the new release being improved call quality, and the quality of video received by mobile Skype users. Presumably one party of the video call must be using Skype for Windows 5.3, though.

Beyond improved call quality, not much has changed. You can now see your friends’ presence icons when contact cards are collapsed, and the topic editing button is now always visible on the conversation header. For a complete list of changes, hit up the Skype Garage blog.

ChromeLite: experience the ASCII Web of yesteryear

ChromeLite ASCII extension

Have you ever wondered what the Web was like before the Mosaic Web browser? If you were born in the last 20-odd years, or you only discovered your inner geek recently, did you miss out on monochrome monitors and the dial-up BBS era? Well, here’s your chance to get a sneak peek at history: grab the ChromeLite extension and marvel as the entire Web is transformed into ASCII characters.

Now, ChromeLite isn’t really all that functional. For the most part, it simply strips images and converts text into a monospaced terminal font. There are a few Easter eggs inserted — such as a fun message at the bottom of YouTube (image after the break) — and some fun ASCII art, but that’s about it. Rather oddly, most JavaScript continues to work — so you can still enjoy Google Instant Search!

ChromeLite was actually made by Google as an April Fools’ joke — and indeed, an annoying ‘you can uninstall this!’ message appears at the top of every page — but we’re kind of hoping that Google, or another developer, takes ChromeLite and turns it into a real ASCII browsing extension with configurable settings. If anything, it will provide an easy way to save bandwidth and CPU time.

AT&T’s One X discovered to have ‘restricted’ bootloader, HTC responds

Since last year, HTC itself has been happy to let you unlock the bootloaders on its Android devices, but that doesn’t mean you’ll always be able to. If you’ll recall, the international version of the One X was rooted just a few weeks ago, but such access apparently isn’t in the cards for the AT&T-branded variant. The inconsistency was discovered by the likes of the XDA-Developers forums and MoDaCo, and after we pinged HTC for comment it responded with the following:

HTC is committed to listening to users and delivering customer satisfaction. Since announcing our commitment to unlockable bootloaders, HTC has worked to enable our customers to unlock the bootloader on more than 45 devices over the past six months. In some cases, however, restrictions prevent certain devices from participating in our bootloader unlocking program. Rest assured, HTC is committed to assisting developers in unlocking bootloaders for HTC devices and we’ll continue to unlock additional devices in the future.”

While HTC clearly isn’t spilling the beans on what “restrictions” are blocking this variant of the Android superphone from entering the land of custom ROMs, it’s become a general suspicion that AT&T might be the source. Naturally, we can’t know for sure at this point, but we’ve reached out to the carrier in hopes of potentially getting more details on the situation. We’ll be sure to keep you posted if we hear anything, but in the meantime, hit up the more coverage links below for further info.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

Screen Grabs chronicles the uses (and misuses) of real-world gadgets in today’s movies and TV. Send in your sightings (with screen grab!) to screengrabs at engadget dot com.

Screen Grabs: Are agents on Fringe flashing their Google Wallet?

We’re not sure exactly what the FBI’s standard issue kit consists of, but we imagine it has more than a few bits of secret tech. These screen grabs from this week’s Fringe, however, would have us believe that the rogue agents like to pick up their tabs with what looks like Google Wallet. We can clearly see a Sprint-branded Galaxy Nexus being used to for a not-so-undercover financial transaction. At least it looks like the agents might have had an upgrade since we last saw them around these parts.

Update: As many of you have pointed out, there was something wrong with our own intel on this case, and it wasn’t one of the agents using the service. Perhaps the bureau isn’t comfortable with e-wallets just yet.

[Thanks, Te-je]

New Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos unearthed, and how to enable channel switching

Firefox Nightly and Aurora logos

Later today, Firefox will undergo its biggest developmental upheaval ever. Mozilla-central, the source of nightly builds, will be renumbered to version 5 — and at long last, after years of wallowing around version 1, Mozilla’s rendering and layout engine, Gecko, will also have its version number updated to match Firefox.

Shortly thereafter, Firefox’s new channel system will be implemented. Firefox 5a2 will be introduced as the first Aurora build, and we should also see a Firefox 6 Nightly build. While we we’re not sure where they came from, one Sören Hentzschel seems to have unearthed the new Nightly and Aurora logos (see above), along with new About Firefox dialogs (after the break).

In other news, if you want to take a sneak peek at the new ‘channel changing’ technology that will be introduced in upcoming Firefox builds, head to about:config and create a new string called app.update.desiredChannel — the value doesn’t matter. Then open Help > About Firefox and you’ll be able to switch channel, but it doesn’t do anything just yet (image after the break). Here’s hoping that Firefox channel switching is smoother than Chrome.

Gladinet maps Amazon Cloud Drive to your Windows desktop

amazon cloud drive
Amazon’s recently-introduced Cloud Drive is a great place to store your files online. It offers 5 gigs of totally free space, and U.S. users also get access to the handy Cloud Player app (for Web and Android!) which streams music you upload to your Cloud Drive.

The service could be a little easier to use, however. Until Amazon releases a desktop client, Windows users might want to take another look at Gladinet. The multi-service cloud connector has now added Amazon Cloud Drive support and will let you map a network drive letter to your account with minimal fuss.

Once you’ve added your credentials to Gladinet, just pick the letter you want to assign to the drive and you’re good to go. You can then copy files to and from your Cloud Drive, rename items, and manage folders like you would any local hard drive in your system.

The only downside is that the free version of Gladinet gives you a limited number of cloud interactions. Once you use those up, you’ll need to upgrade to the paid version, which costs $49.99. If you work with a number of cloud-based storage providers, however, it could be well worth the price tag.

Facebook for Android updated, Messenger and Camera apps removed

Android CentralThe official Facebook application for Android has received an update today, eliminating the much-maligned "Camera" and "Messenger" shortcuts within the app drawer. The apps were first bundled with Facebook in version 1.9, and have been criticized for potentially misleading users. An attempt was made in version 1.9.1 to remedy this with a small Facebook icons in the lower left corner, however now it seems the decision has been made to pull them entirely. No other changes seem to have been made in this latest version, and the Facebook Messenger app remains available as a separate download on the Google Play Store.

In addition, the changelog for the latest version 1.9.2 includes lists "bug fixes" as being included in the new build.

Hit the update button to grab the new version. Alternatively, we've got the usual Google Play links and QR codes after the break.

AT&T CEO voices regret over iPhone unlimited data model

It’s always refreshing to hear the head of a major corporation cop to past mistakes — particularly in front of a large crowd of on-lookers. AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson admitted some misgivings about the way the carrier handled iPhone data, telling a crowd at the Milken Institute’s Global Conference in Los Angeles, “My only regret was how we introduced pricing in the beginning, because how did we introduce pricing? Thirty dollars and you get all you can eat.” Stephenson drove the point home by adding, “Every additional megabyte you use in this network, I have to invest capital.”

And, for the record, that certainly wasn’t the only thing about the iPhone that kept the exec up at night. Stephenson again,

You lie awake at night worrying about what is that which will disrupt your business model,” he said. “Apple iMessage is a classic example. If you’re using iMessage, you’re not using one of our messaging services, right?

No one ahead said it was easy being the chief.

Twitter rumored to have talked about acquiring iOS app Camera+

Two anonymous sources are claiming that Twitter was looking to acquire Camera+, one of the top iOS photography apps available. Unfortunately, the folks that make Camera+ are all over the world, and few were willing to move to San Francisco as a part of the deal.

Elephant Quest is an addictive, deep platformer

elephantquest

When someone tells me about a “platformer”, my first thought is that it’s probably a simple game that mainly revolves around running and jumping around, with a minimal plot. [Play a Zelda game! -Ed]

Elephant Quest is one platformer that managed to prove me completely wrong. Yes, you do run and jump around, and you also shoot at stuff. But the game has much, much more going for it.

Basically, as you run, jump and shoot, you gain experience points and level up. Hitting Space brings you into an interface where you can convert your experience points into Charisma, Intelligence, Agility and Dexterity points. Once you’ve “specialized” your points, you then get to pick what exact skills you’d like to enhance in each field. For example, you could use your dexterity to enhance your weapons or increase your swiftness.

The game is played in a huge maze; you go through rooms using doors, and there’s a large map. As the name implies, there are quests you can take, too. For example, one quest had me searching all over the place for ten balloons.

The bottom line is that this is a surprisingly deep game that just might ensnare you for a good bit longer than you intended to play. Beware!

How to Pirate Software Without Getting Caught [Piracy]

Pirating software you don’t own is always illegal. But there are times when you do own software that you can’t access without pirating it. The cruel irony is that in those times, you’re probably more at risk of getting slapped with a lawsuit than real, actual pirates. Here’s a guide to pirating like a pro to get back what’s rightfully yours. More »

TweetDeck to launch as HTML5 Web app, now accepting beta testers

When TweetDeck landed in the Chrome Web Store, it seemed like an indication that it might eventually evolve into a pure HTML5 Web app. Now it looks as though that’s exactly what’s going to happen, with TweetDeck announcing that a new, not-just-for-Chrome Web client is ready for beta testing.

It’s a natural progression for TweetDeck, especially since its originally Adobe Air app is practically all Web code. TweetDeck Web will sport a feature set which is nearly identical to the Chrome app, with the notable exception of Twitter streaming.

Initially, TweetDeck is targeting Firefox 4 and 3.6, Google Chrome, and Safari. Opera and Internet Explorer 9 won’t be invited to the dance until a bit later on.

If you’d like to get in on the TweetDeck Web beta, head on over and register — or sign up using your existing TweetDeck account.

First Firefox 6 build next week, Firefox 7 by May, and aurora channel introduced

Firefox 5, 6, 7 and release channels

Mozilla’s Engineering Project Manager, Christian Legnitto, has detailed the release schedule for Firefox 5, 6 and 7. If all goes to plan, Firefox 6.0a1 will be released next week, April 12, and Firefox 7.0a1 in the middle of May. The final build of Firefox 5 should be released on June 21, exactly three months after the release of Firefox 4.

Along with the faster 6-week release cadence, Firefox’s new Chrome-like release channels have also been given names and anticipated update frequencies. The most notable change is the introduction of a new alpha channel — which is analogous to Chrome Canary — that will be called ‘aurora’ and will update nightly. Aurora will be where fixes and features are tested, and either approved for Beta, or backed out to Central. Aurora will have a new icon, too.

The Nightly (mozilla-central) channel will remain unchanged in name and frequency, but it will gain a new ‘nightly icon.’ The Beta (mozilla-beta) channel will remain as-is, with new builds rolling out weekly. The Release (mozilla-release) channel will also remain as-is, with security and stability updates coming every 6 to 12 weeks.

It should be noted that the names (including ‘aurora’) are not necessarily final, but it’s unlikely that they’ll change. We’re also awaiting the arrival of the new ‘channel switching’ technology, which should arrive in the next few days — in time for the release of Firefox 6 aurora!

Pizza Hut Cheesy Bites Pizza Lightning Review [Food]

We aren’t getting an official stateside release of the obviously-inspired-by-America hot dog crust pizza from Pizza Hut. Sad. But Pizza Hut’s trying to make it up to us with the return of Cheesy Bites pizza, which it horrifyingly refers to as the Pizza Hut version of the McRib. Hoo boy. More »

Dish Network, AMC dispute could see the network’s channels dropped this summer

It wasn’t that long ago that Dish Network was proudly offering AMC HD to its customers (especially since DirecTV didn’t, which has since been rectified) but now the company is willing to let the network’s contract expire this summer, taking new episodes of Mad Men, Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead away from subscribers. The source of the sudden animosity, according to a press release from AMC, is continuing litigation between it and Dish Network over dropping the Voom HD channels back in 2008, leading to them going dark soon after. The LA Times reports Dish Network claims the denial of its appeal on a decision in the case has nothing to do with its sudden change of heart is solely about AMC’s high renewal cost for a relatively low viewership. Whatever you believe, the sniping and threats will likely continue right up until the contract runs out June 30th, which is at least long enough for this season of Mad Men to finish on its own.
